Ocular dot-matrix, character LCD modules come in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. The LCD modules are comprised of groups organized in blocks of 5 x 7 pixels. This arrangement offers an alphanumeric display of up to 40 characters per line to a maximum of four lines. Standard configuration available from the common 8x2, 16x1, 16x2 to the large 40x4 character display are available. For the latest available models, please contact your regional sales team. An LCD module consists of a liquid crystal display that incorporates all the necessary drive electronics, backlighting (optional), and mounting mechanisms into one convenient subassembly. The advantage of a module over an LCD by itself is that it literally "plugs-in" to the host electronic without additional assembly requirements. Ocular offers both standard and custom LCD modules.

Backlit Character Modules

Character LCD modules with backlighting are aesthetically pleasing and increase readability in low-light environments. Ocular offers products employing the array-style Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlighting method as an option. Other backlighting options may be used. Available power, preferred color, brightness, and product lifecycle requirements determine which method will best suit the application.

Controller

All Ocular character LCD modules have an on-board controller (Hitachi HD44780 or S6A0066 and equivalent) that allows the LCD module to interface directly with a 4-bit or 8-bit microprocessor or microcontroller. The standard character based controller has 192 character patterns in the character generator (CG) ROM. CGROM generates 5x7 and 5x10 pixel character patterns from 8-bit character codes. This results in as many as 160 character patterns in the 5x7 mode and 32 character patterns in the 5x10 mode. The user-definable RAM contains up to eight user-programmable characters.
